UP 2027 BATTLE: SP Begins Seat-Sharing Exercise as Congress Alliance Talks Gather Momentum

Political preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections have begun to gather pace, with the Samajwadi Party (SP) reportedly initiating internal discussions on seat-sharing arrangements in the event of an alliance with the Congress. As electoral calculations intensify, the party is simultaneously preparing for both alliance and standalone contest scenarios. Sources indicate that Akhilesh Yadav has sought feedback from party leaders, legislators, and local representatives regarding constituencies that could potentially be allocated to the Congress if opposition unity is maintained. The exercise is being viewed as an early effort to assess the viability of a seat-sharing formula ahead of the high-stakes state election. At the same time, the Samajwadi Party is reportedly conducting extensive constituency-level assessments across all 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Surveys and organizational reviews are said to be underway to identify strong contenders, evaluate local political equations, and prepare a comprehensive list of potential candidates. Party strategists are focusing on factors such as electoral performance, social coalitions, local influence, and winnability. According to political observers, the SP’s dual-track strategy reflects uncertainty over the final shape of opposition alliances before the 2027 contest. While discussions on cooperation with the Congress continue, the party appears determined to remain prepared for a solo campaign if negotiations fail to produce a mutually acceptable arrangement.
