SPECIAL REPORT: The Rise of Champat Rai, From Ram Janmabhoomi Strategist to Trust Chief Under Scrutiny

For decades, Champat Rai has been regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, playing a key organizational role from the early 1990s through the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Often described by supporters as the “custodian” of the movement’s records and institutional memory, Rai was entrusted with managing crucial documentation, coordinating legal preparations, and overseeing administrative arrangements during the long legal and social campaign surrounding the temple. After being assigned to Ayodhya by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1991, Champat Rai became closely associated with the movement’s organizational framework. Following the demolition of the disputed structure in 1992 and the lengthy legal battle that followed, he reportedly handled records, legal documents, court coordination, and logistical support related to the Ram Janmabhoomi case. His familiarity with the movement earned him a reputation among supporters as one of the most knowledgeable figures connected with the temple project. Following the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict on the Ayodhya dispute, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was constituted, and Champat Rai was appointed General Secretary. In that role, he became one of the key administrators responsible for overseeing temple construction, managing donations, coordinating development activities, and communicating official updates regarding the project. However, recent allegations related to the handling of temple donations have placed the trust’s functioning under intense public and political scrutiny. While questions have been raised about administrative accountability, Champat Rai has denied any personal involvement in wrongdoing and has maintained that appropriate action was initiated after suspected irregularities came to light. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities continue to examine the allegations. As legal proceedings move forward, the spotlight remains firmly on one of the most prominent faces of the Ram Temple movement and the administration overseeing one of India’s most significant religious projects.
