Assam Swearing-In: Himanta Biswa Sarma Set for Second Term as CM with Strong NDA Mandate

Assam is set to witness the return of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government as Himanta Biswa Sarma prepares to take oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 11:40 AM, where Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new chief minister and his council of ministers. The development follows the NDA’s sweeping victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, where the alliance secured a commanding two-thirds majority in the 126-member House. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the dominant force with 82 seats, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won 10 seats each, taking the NDA tally to a massive 102 seats. In the BJP legislature party meeting and subsequent NDA legislators’ gathering, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the alliance, paving the way for the coalition’s third straight government in Assam. Alongside Sarma, four senior leaders are expected to take oath as ministers, including former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, AGP president Atul Bora, BPF leader Chandan Brahma, and BJP MLA Ajanta Neog. Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass is likely to be the NDA’s candidate for the post of Speaker in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Political observers view the renewed mandate as a strong endorsement of the BJP-led alliance’s governance model, development agenda, and regional political strategy in the Northeast. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who joined the BJP in August 2015 after leaving the Congress, first assumed office as Assam Chief Minister in 2021 and has since emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in eastern India.
