Fuzzy Zoeller has died at the age of 74, as confirmed by Sky Sports and the USGA. Zoeller was one of golf’s most well-known players. He was the last player to win the Masters on his first try, which he did in 1979 after a three-man playoff. He also won the 1984 U.S. Open.Fans knew him for his happy personality, fast play, and funny moments on the golf course. One of his most famous moments came in 1984, when he waved a white towel because he thought Greg Norman had beaten him. But Norman had not won yet, and Zoeller came back the next day to win in an 18-hole playoff.Fuzzy Zoeller’s career had great wins, but he also faced a big problem in 1997 when he made a hurtful comment about Tiger Woods during the Masters. He later said sorry and called it “the worst thing I’ve gone through in my life,” as written in Golf Digest.

Fuzzy Zoeller’s life, his big wins, his mistake, and his long legacy

Fuzzy Zoeller was born Frank Urban Zoeller Jr. in New Albany, Indiana. His father was also called “Fuzzy,” so he got the same nickname. He played junior college golf, later joined the strong Houston team, and turned professional in 1973.His biggest win came at the 1979 Masters, where he beat Ed Sneed and Tom Watson with a birdie on the second playoff hole. After the ball dropped, he threw his putter high in the air. Sky Sports wrote that he was the last Masters rookie to ever win the event. In the 1984 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, Zoeller thought Greg Norman had made a birdie, so he waved a white towel. Later he learned it was only a par. They played an 18-hole playoff the next day, and Zoeller won by eight shots, a huge margin. His only regret was giving the towel away to a kid before he knew he needed it for memories.Zoeller won two major titles, eight other PGA Tour events, and two PGA Tour Champions titles. He was given the Bob Jones Award by the USGA in 1985 for his sportsmanship. His wife, Diane, died in 2021. Zoeller had three children, including daughter Gretchen, who played with him in the PNC Championship.Fuzzy Zoeller leaves behind a life filled with big wins, fun moments, and lessons he said he would never forget. Also Read: Why Did A Biological Male Win The World’s Strongest Woman?
