Trump administration begins deportation of Iranians after rare agreement with Tehran

The US begins to deport Iranians living in the country, targeting those convicted with criminal records amid calls from Iran to respect migrant’s right

Around hundreds of Iranians are expected to be deported from the United States under the Trump administration as a part of strict immigration measures according to US and Iranian officials. This included both those who have entered the country through some illegal means or those who committed a criminal offence as stated by an US official.

The reason for this immigration remains the mutual coordination between the two nations and Iran’s nuclear programme which Washington claims as an explosive and aimed at building a nuclear bomb.

Urge to protect Iranian rights

The Iranian foreign ministry’s director general for parliament affairs, Hossein Noushabadi, stated “The U.S. was planning to deport around 400 Iranians, most of whom entered the country illegally, in line with the new anti-immigrant approach of the U.S. government.”

“In the first step, they decided to deport 120 Iranians who entered the U.S. illegally, most of whom through Mexico,” he told the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Noushabadi urged the US to uphold the dignity and respect of Iranian migrants residing in the United Nations.

The first group of 120 would reach Iran in the next one or two days, he said.

A US flight that was scheduled to arrive in Qatar on late Tuesday took off from Louisiana on Monday so the deportees could be transferred to a Tehran bound flight as stated by a US official.

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said “In general terms, States must ensure access to asylum, due process, and respect for the principle of non-refoulement, meaning that people in need of international protection must not be returned to a place where they face risk of harm.”

USA’s immigration sweep

According to the New York Times which first reported about the deportation taking place stated that some Iranians left after spending their time in the detention centres for months and some did not.

Noushabadi said, “Some (returnees) had residence permits but due to reasons stated by the US immigration office they were included in the list. Of course, their own consent was obtained for their return.”

Donald Trump plans to deport a historic turnout living in the United States without any legal status after illegal migration through the borders under former President Joe Biden.
