Panic gripped a village in Odisha’s Keonjhar district after an 8-year-old girl was found trapped overnight inside her school classroom, according to officials.

The Class 2 student, Jyotsna Dehuri, had attended classes at the Government Upper Primary School in Anjar under Banspal block on Thursday.

But when lessons ended at 4 pm, teachers and staff locked up the building without noticing she was still inside, officials said.

Her family searched through the night but could not trace her.

In a desperate attempt to get out, Jyotsna squeezed her body through a classroom window fitted with iron bars, but her head got stuck. She remained trapped in that position until morning.

Around 9 am on Friday, the school cook unlocked the classroom and spotted her. Villagers and family members then bent the iron bars to free her.

She was rushed to the district headquarters hospital, where doctors confirmed she was safe.

Taking serious note of the negligence, the district administration suspended acting headmaster Gourahari Mahanta.

The School and Mass Education Department said the child was now fine and receiving medical attention.
