'No protestor left behind': CJP claims Centre assured no FIRs in Bihar and Assam after midnight talks

Saurav Das said that govt assured them of no action against protestors

NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) early Wednesday claimed that the Centre’s representatives have shared draft notifications issued by the Bihar and Assam governments assuring withdrawal of FIRs, release of those arrested or detained during the NEET-UG protest agitation, and protection from any future legal action. In a post on X, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said, “Hours after our press conference, Government’s representatives met us. The meeting lasted for 2-3 hours. They shared copies of the Bihar and Assam notifications guaranteeing FIR withdrawals, no action in future, and release of all detainees and arrestees.”He added, “They’ve reiterated their promise of releasing guarantee notifications by the Union government and other BJP/NDA states by tomorrow. Hopefully, the agreed-upon language shall be used. No protester will be left alone. We are all in this together!” Earlier in the day, Das had also shared the Assam government’s order on X, stating, “Next up, Assam Government guarantees release of all arrested protesters, no FIRs or action in future, and withdrawal of all existing FIRs.”In another post, he had said, “After Bihar and Assam notifications, we have just been guaranteed that no authority will proceed against protesters in Rajasthan. No FIRs have been registered. None will be. We are continuously working to ensure all other risky BJP/NDA states release notifications in the required language in protesters’ interest. We will never let any youth fight this alone!”The Assam government on Monday announced that it would withdraw criminal cases and other legal proceedings initiated against people who participated in demonstrations over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. According to a statement issued by the state’s Home and Political Department, five cases were registered in connection with the protests, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals. The government said that, after reviewing the matter, it had decided not to pursue any adverse legal action against those involved in protest-related cases registered before 6 pm on July 26, 2026. It also said the process to withdraw all such cases, regardless of the stage of investigation or trial, would be initiated in accordance with the law.The statement further said that authorities would expedite the review of arrests and ensure the release of those detained in connection with the registered cases. It added that no further legal proceedings would be initiated against the protesters and that the matter would be considered closed. The NEET-UG protest was called off on July 25 after Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned. The government subsequently reached an agreement with CJP and activist Sonam Wangchuk, under which it committed to withdrawing protest-related cases, preventing police action against demonstrators, and bringing in legislation to curb examination paper leaks.
