Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday and appeared to be flattering him. Carney made sure not to overlook any detail when preparing for his visit to Washington this week — including his choice of tie.

“I wore red for you,” the Canadian Prime Minister said to Trump as they shook hands and appeared to exchange brief pleasantries while greeting each other outside the US President’s House.

Carney, in a light-hearted joke, pointed towards his patterned red-coloured tie to match the typical Republican branding, and he shook hands with Trump.

Notably, the meeting between the two leaders came months after Trump imposed a 35 per cent tariff on imports from Canada from August 1.

Meanwhile, Trump also struck a friendly tone with Carney, lauding progress towards a trade deal but providing few tangible concessions on high US tariffs. Trump repeatedly praised Carney, who was under pressure at home to show progress following his second visit to the White House since taking office in April.

The Canadian Prime Minister was seen trying hard to get on the US President’s good graces, despite the stressful ties over trade and Trump’s threats to annex his country.
