The main accused in a Rs 2-crore robbery case, who had escaped from police custody in Firozabad’s Makhanpur area, was killed in an encounter with police early Sunday.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Saurabh Dixit, the accused, identified as Naresh, was spotted by a police team in the Makhanpur area.

When officers tried to stop him, he opened fire on them. The police retaliated, and Naresh sustained bullet injuries. He was taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

During the exchange of fire, Ramgarh SHO Sanjeev Dubey was also injured, while ASP (Rural) Anuj Chaudhary narrowly escaped after a bullet struck his bulletproof jacket.

SSP Dixit said Naresh had been interrogated earlier in the day, during which Rs 20 lakh was recovered from him.

After the encounter, police seized an illegal firearm and another Rs 20 lakh in cash from his bag.

Naresh had a bounty of Rs 50,000 announced on him by the Agra DIG following his escape from custody.

His body has been sent for post-mortem examination, to be conducted by a panel of doctors.

SHO Dubey is currently admitted to a hospital for treatment, police said.
