Throughout the day, women wear festive clothes, often in shades of red, symbolising marriage and love. They adorn themselves with jewellery, bangles, and mehendi, and later gather in the evening for rituals. Karwa Chauth 2025: Story
The word Karwa means earthen pot, used during rituals to offer water to the moon. Chauth refers to the fourth day of Kartik, when the festival is held. The tradition of Karwa Chauth is very old, with references even in the Mahabharata.
One of the most famous legends linked to this day is the story of Queen Veervati. She observed her first Karwa Chauth fast for her husband’s health and long life. However, due to weakness, she struggled to complete the fast.
Worried about her, her brothers tricked her into thinking the moon had risen by using mirrors. She broke her fast early, but soon after, she received the heartbreaking news that her husband had died.
Devastated, she prayed with full devotion, and her husband was miraculously brought back to life. Since then, Karwa Chauth has become a tradition where women fast for their husbands’ long lives.
Karwa Chauth 2025: Significance
Karwa Chauth is seen as a symbol of love, trust, and commitment between married couples. Women fast the whole day for their husband’s long and healthy life, while in return, husbands show appreciation with gifts and gestures of care.
In today’s time, many men also keep the fast for their wives, making it a celebration of equality and togetherness. The festival strengthens the bond between couples and reflects the deep devotion that forms the core of marriage.
Why Women Fast for Their Husbands
On Karwa Chauth, women fast the entire day from sunrise to moonrise without food or water. The fast coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, a day dedicated to Lord Ganesha, and includes the worship of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha.
Women believe that their devotion ensures a happy, long, and prosperous married life. The rituals include offering water, known as Arghya, to the moon using the earthen pot or Karwa. After the rituals, this pot is often donated to a Brahmin or another married woman.
The festival is also deeply connected to the story of Goddess Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, she performed severe penance to marry Lord Shiva. Her dedication and love became a symbol of faithfulness, which is why women worship her on Karwa Chauth along with Lord Shiva.
