Over 12,000 prisoners escaped jails in Nepal during last week’s violent Gen Z protests that erupted across the Himalayan nation against corruption and social media ban.

One of them was 31-year-old Arjun Kumar alias Bhola, who was accused of killing his girlfriend eight years ago in Delhi. He was arrested at the Indo-Nepal border while trying to return to his village in Bihar’s Chhapra district.

As per the police, the woman’s body was found in Bhola’s rented room, where he allegedly stabbed her multiple times before slitting her throat. Bhola was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to his arrest and had been on the run after committing the crime.

“Bhola developed a relationship with the victim, who lived in the same building as his family in New Ashok Nagar. When she refused to marry him and her family arranged her marriage elsewhere, he allegedly killed her, locked the rented room where the crime was committed, and fled,” DCP (Crime Branch) Harsh Indora said as quoted by the news agency.

Meanwhile, he fled to Nepal and got involved in heinous crimes there. He, along with his friend Naushad, killed a woman, for which he was sentenced to prison for 25 years.

During the recent violent unrest in the neighbouring nation, there was a jailbreak and he fled again and tried to enter India.

After intelligence was received that he was attempting to cross over to India and go to his native place in Bihar, a team was strategically deployed on the border, which arrested him from Raxaul.

The officer said the Crime Branch kept surveillance on him for years, even after his conviction in Nepal. Once the jailbreak was confirmed, inputs were quickly developed and a team carried out the operation that led to his arrest, he said.

Kumar, who studied till Class 5, had been working in Delhi before the 2017 murder. He had a violent streak and repeated his crime pattern in Nepal, the officer said.

“The accused is of a very dangerous nature. He murdered in the same manner in both Delhi and Nepal. He was absconding for a long time, but due to constant surveillance and hard work of the team, he has finally been caught,” Indora said.

Nepal Unrest

Nepal’s political landscape was thrown into unprecedented turmoil last week, as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned in the face of a furious and violent youth-led uprising.

The protests led by students appeared to reflect the growing public anger with the Oli dispensation over a range of issues, including a ban on social media and alleged inaction against corruption.

The unrest reached a boiling point with deadly clashes on September 8, when security forces’ response to the protests resulted in at least 19 fatalities. This sparked even greater outrage among demonstrators, predominantly from the digitally native “Gen Z” demographic.

At least 51 people, including an Indian national, died in the recent unrest.

The violence continued even after Oli’s resignation, with protesters setting fire to the Parliament, the President’s office, the prime minister’s residence, government buildings, party offices and homes of senior leaders.

On Friday night, former Nepal chief justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as the country’s first woman prime minister to head an interim government, ending days of unrest.
