Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the interim terminal building at the New Civil Enclave of Purnea Airport in Bihar. Civil Aviation of India Ram Mohan Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, and Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Kumar Sinha and Samrat Choudhary accompanied him.

The prime minister also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple development projects worth around Rs 36,000 crore in Purnea later in the day.

The new facility significantly enhances passenger handling capacity, positioning the airport to better serve the growing demand for air travel in the region. This not only strengthens Bihar’s aviation infrastructure but also promises to boost economic activity, tourism, and accessibility in one of the state’s key districts.

“Congratulations to the people of Purnea and surrounding areas on the new airport terminal building, which will boost commerce, connectivity and tourism,” PM Modi wrote on X.

The Prime Minister further launched the National Makhana Board in Purnea, Bihar – a move first announced in the Union Budget 2025 that the government says will help scale up production, processing and exports of makhana, also known as fox nut. The Centre has approved a development package worth nearly Rs 475 crore for the sector.

The board is likely to prioritise enhancing production standards, improving post-harvest practices, adopting new technologies, expanding value-addition initiatives, and strengthening marketing and export networks. Officials added that it will also assist farmer-producer organisations and enable makhana growers to tap into relevant central government schemes.
