It is not just luck to stay mentally sharp as we grow older. Although it is not possible to avoid aging; the rate at which our memory, concentration and clarity is deteriorating is highly dependent on our daily choices. Every habit whether it is what we consume or how we move around or even the manner in which we utilize our brain, it leaves an imprint on the future of our brain.

Your Lifestyle, Your Brain’s Shield

One of the strongest protective factors against cognitive decline is engaging in physical activity. Even exercise such as brisk walking, swimming and yoga will significantly elevate circulation and nutrient uptake to the brains cells.

Sleep is equally important, sleep hygiene readily allows for the brain to self-repair and build memories after seven to nine hours of adequate sleep. Stress, however, may destroy the hippocampus, the learning and memory region without being detected. Meditation, breath exercises, or simply breaking the habit of spending all the time around digital noise by taking a walk can create balance.

Nutrition: Feeding the Mind Right

Feeding the mind right: nutrition. Food not only gives the body energy but also the brain.Diet High in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fish contain antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids that protect neurons and aid in communication between the brain cells. Processed foods and surplus sugar, on the contrary, cause inflammation, which contributes to memory loss faster. Hydration is also a bigger issue than one may think- even mild dehydration may affect attention and short-term memory.

A long-term study has indicated that adhering to such eating patterns as the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of cognitive deterioration by 10-20 percent. This brings out the fact that what we place on our plate today defines how our mind is going to perform tomorrow.

Keeping Your Mind Engaged and Connected

The brain, similar to any muscle, strengthens when it is put to the test. Reading, solving puzzles, or learning a new skill can be a way to develop cognitive reserve, which is some sort of system of backup, ensuring that the brain does not collapse in the face of changes over time. Social interaction has the same strength. Sharing conversations, laughing with friends, and joining group activities keep the brain lively while easing the loneliness that can speed up decline.

A few small habits can go a long way:

● Take up an activity that you have never done.

● Create some time to have meaningful conversations.

● Test your brain with puzzles, games or learning.

Aging does not have to equal a fading brain. Making the choice to be active, eat well, sleep enough and stimulate your mind by engaging with other people, can all lead to memory and clarity that will last for many years. Day to day decisions. While they may be simple, can create the difference for a brighter future and clearer future.
