Trump tends to go after leaders, but has gone out of way to compliment PM Modi: Sergio Gor

Introducing Gor to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, US State Secretary Marco Rubio, said he is the “nominee to India, which is, I would say, one of the top relationships the US has in the world today, in terms of the future, what the world is going to look like”

US Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor has said that President Donald Trump “goes out of his way” to compliment Prime Minister Narendra Modi despite differences between the two countries, as he addressed his Senate confirmation.

Gor added that “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond”, highlighting that Trump shares a “deep friendship” with PM Modi.

Gor, 38, who is expected to become the youngest US envoy to India, stated that he is dedicated to advancing America’s interests in this “important” partnership. This marks the first time the envoy-designate has publicly commented on US-India relations.

Introducing Gor to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, US State Secretary Marco Rubio, said he is the “nominee to India, which is, I would say, one of the top relationships the US has in the world today, in terms of the future, what the world is going to look like.”

India-US trade deal soon?

During his comments at the Senate, Gor said India and the US are actively working on a trade deal. “Part of that will include hopeful, a hopeful deal. We are not that far apart right now on a deal. In fact, they’re negotiating the nitty-gritty of a deal… We expect more from India than we do sometimes from other nations. I do think it will get resolved over the next few weeks.”

In Delhi, the statements by Gor and Rubio were received in a “positive manner,” sources told The Indian Express. According to the sources, high-level visits by senior officials focused on trade and defence are expected in the coming days. “Discussions on trade and defence equipment are likely to gain momentum, and high-level visits cannot be ruled out at this stage,” one source said.

Trump to visit India?

Gor also hinted that Trump may travel to India for the Quad Leaders Summit later this year. He said that “the President is fully committed to meeting leaders of Quad…there have already been talks on a trip for the next Quad meeting”.

During his confirmation hearing, Gor said that he still would not commit to an exact date for Trump’s visit. “The QUAD is vitally important,” Gor said.
