Mexico considering tariffs on non-FTA nations, including China, says Mexican President Sheinbaum

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday that her government is weighing the possibility of imposing tariffs on imports from countries without trade agreements with Mexico, including China

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday that her government is weighing the possibility of imposing tariffs on imports from countries without trade agreements with Mexico, including China.

The move would be part of “Plan Mexico,” a strategy aimed at strengthening domestic industry in response to tariffs recently imposed by US President Donald Trump on certain Mexican imports.

“We are considering imposing certain tariffs,” Reuters quoted Sheinbaum as saying at her daily news conference, noting that the measures would target countries without trade agreements with Mexico, including China.

Sheinbaum did not specify which products or sectors might be impacted.

Mexico is a member of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA in 2020 during former President Donald Trump’s first term. The deal includes a mandatory joint review by all three nations after six years.
