War Watch: US-Iran Deadlock Deepens as Pakistan Struggles to Revive Failing Peace Talks

The possibility of negotiations between the United States and Iran remains deeply uncertain, as rising tensions and repeated diplomatic failures cast doubt over any near-term breakthrough. Pakistan has attempted to position itself as a mediator, but its efforts so far have failed to bring both sides to the table. The first round of talks on April 12 lasted nearly 21 hours but ended without agreement. A second attempt on April 20 collapsed after Iran did not participate, despite a large American delegation arriving. Now, with April 25 marked for a possible third round, uncertainty dominates the situation, with no clear confirmation of direct engagement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Islamabad, but reports indicate he will only meet Pakistani officials and not US representatives. This has raised questions about whether the visit is purely diplomatic rather than negotiation-focused. Key sticking points continue to block progress. Iran has maintained firm demands, including easing restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz, the release of vast frozen financial assets, and removal of US-imposed sanctions. On the other side, former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of severe consequences if a deal is not reached, combining pressure tactics with calls for negotiation.  Meanwhile, concerns are growing globally. Reports of increased military activity and potential threats to shipping routes have heightened fears of disruption to oil supplies and international trade. Organizations like the United Nations have warned of serious economic fallout, with millions at risk of falling into poverty due to prolonged instability.
