Exquisite, rare, and timeless, Bulgarian roses have long held a place of pride in the worlds of both skincare and perfumery. Coveted for their unique aroma, therapeutic properties, and rich history, they continue to inspire modern beauty rituals and luxury creations. Dr Soma Sarkar, MBBS, MD, Dermatology, co-founder SkinBB and Lead Dermatologist, and Amita Agrawal, Director of Perfumery, Mysore Deep Perfumery House & Zed Black, share insights into what makes the Bulgarian rose so extraordinary.

A Skincare Treasure with Antioxidant Power

According to Dr Sarkar, Bulgarian roses are one of the most exotic and exquisite ingredients because of their rarity and complex origin. “These Bulgarian roses are utilized in skincare products for their exceptionally strong floral aroma mix, where they function as a hydrating lotion or function as antioxidants,” she explains. Rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, they target free radicals, helping manage conditions such as rosacea and dryness, while leaving skin with a radiant, hydrating sheen.

Dr Sarkar highlights that their versatility allows them to be incorporated across multiple skincare categories from bath gels and moisturisers to even fragrance-infused creams. The result is skincare that not only pampers but also protects.

A Perfume Ingredient Steeped in History

For Amita Agrawal, the rose is far more than just an ingredient, it is a symbol of beauty, power, and timeless allure. “The Rose has long been called the queen of flowers in perfumery, and for good reason. Roses, especially from the Bulgarian Rose Valley, have been prized since Roman times,” she says.

Historically, roses have played a central role in rituals and luxury. In ancient Egypt, Queen Cleopatra famously filled her chambers with rose petals to enchant Mark Antony. In the Roman Empire, Bulgarian rose oil was used in baths, banquets, and ceremonies as a mark of indulgence. Medieval monks cultivated roses for their medicinal and aromatic properties, while in 17th-century France, roses became integral to fine perfumery. “Every century created its own story, thus making rose a timeless fragrance that still dominates the world of perfumery today,” she adds.

A Fixative, a Feeling, and a Favorite

From a perfumer’s perspective, Bulgarian rose oil is invaluable because it serves as a natural fixative, helping fragrances last longer. But beyond its function, Mrs. Agrawal emphasizes its emotional resonance, “Bulgarian rose is not just a flower, it’s a feeling. The fragrance can be soft and romantic, bold and mysterious, or even spicy and seductive, depending on how it’s blended.” This versatility is why rose-based perfumes continue to be among the most loved luxury fragrances in India and around the globe.

A Dual Legacy of Beauty and Fragrance

Together, the insights from Dr. Sarkar and Agrawal reveal why Bulgarian roses straddle two worlds so effortlessly, they are skincare allies and perfume icons. While dermatology celebrates their antioxidant, hydrating qualities, perfumery reveres their timeless scent and cultural legacy. Bulgarian roses, in essence, embody both science and sensuality making them a true jewel of luxury beauty.
