Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the demise of legendary Marathi theatre personality Vijaya Mehta, who passed away at her Mumbai residence at the age of 91. A towering figure in Indian theatre and parallel cinema, Mehta is remembered for her immense contribution to modern Marathi theatre and for influencing generations of performers and filmmakers.Taking to X, the Prime Minister described Vijaya Mehta as one of the most influential figures in India’s cultural and cinematic landscape, highlighting her pioneering work and dedication to the arts.”Deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Vijaya Mehta Ji. She will be remembered as one of the towering personalities of culture and cinema. A pioneer of modern Marathi theatre, she was known for her creativity and commitment to artistic excellence.”He also acknowledged the lasting impact of her work and extended his condolences to her loved ones and the artistic community.”Her work inspired generations of actors, directors and theatre lovers. My thoughts are with her family, admirers and the entire artistic fraternity in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”Affectionately known as “Bai”, Vijaya Mehta was among the architects of modern Indian theatre. As a director, actor and producer, she played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s experimental theatre movement. She was also a founding member of Mumbai’s Rangayan theatre group alongside playwright Vijay Tendulkar and actors Arvind Deshpande and Shreeram Lagoo. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Mehta co-founded Rangayan and directed several landmark stage productions, including Ek Shoonya Bajirao and Ajab Nyay Vartulacha. She also directed acclaimed films such as Rao Saheb and Pestonjee.Born Vijaya Jaywant on November 4, 1934, in Baroda, she trained under renowned theatre mentors Ebrahim Alkazi and Adi Marzban. Her distinguished career was recognised with several honours, including the Padma Shri in 1986, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 1975, the Tagore Ratna in 2012, and the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.Apart from her theatre work, Vijaya Mehta also made a significant mark in Indian parallel cinema with critically acclaimed performances in films such as Kalyug and Party, earning widespread praise for her powerful and understated performances.
