In recent years, waxing has gained popularity as a method for removing unwanted body hair, from legs and arms to the back. But a growing trend among men, waxing the beard instead of shaving, has raised health concerns. Experts warn that this practice can be both painful and potentially harmful when done repeatedly.

Dr. Yugal Rajput, Assistant Professor and Dermatologist at GSVM Medical College in Kanpur, UP, told News18 that men should avoid waxing their beards due to the extreme pain and potential health risks involved. Waxing a dense and thick beard can cause skin irritation, swelling, redness, or a burning sensation. Moreover, conditions such as folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), ingrown hairs, or skin peeling may occur. Sensitive skin or existing skin allergies necessitate consulting a doctor prior to waxing.

Dr. Rajput advises against self-waxing the beard, highlighting its dangers. For those seeking long-term beard hair removal, waxing might be considered but is not universally suitable, especially for individuals with sensitive skin or low pain tolerance. A patch test is recommended before proceeding with beard waxing. Alternatively, using a razor is a cost-effective and efficient method for maintaining a clean-shaven beard. Laser hair removal presents another option for long-term hair removal but is expensive and should be performed by a professional.

Occasional beard waxing by a professional is acceptable, but frequent waxing can lead to complications. Men who dislike having a beard can opt for daily shaving or trimming, which is both cheap and effective. Waxing is generally more suitable for body parts where hair regrowth occurs over several months, unlike beard hair, which grows back quickly, making frequent waxing impractical.
