UP POLITICAL ROW: Rajbhar Targets SP After ATS Arrest, Sparks Fresh Azamgarh Controversy

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh following the arrest of a suspect by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Azamgarh. The development triggered a sharp exchange in the state’s political landscape after senior leader Om Prakash Rajbhar linked the incident to the opposition’s political influence in the region. The ATS recently detained a man identified as Mohammad Sheikh in connection with an ongoing investigation into an alleged network reportedly linked to a Pakistan-based gangster. Security agencies are continuing to probe the nature of the suspect’s activities and any possible connections to transnational criminal or extremist elements. Reacting to the arrest, Rajbhar launched a political attack on the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, claiming that repeated security-related arrests from Azamgarh raise serious questions. His remarks have reignited a long-standing political debate over the district’s image and its association with past investigations involving security agencies. Rajbhar praised the ATS for its operation and called for strict action against individuals found involved in anti-national activities. At the same time, his comments drew attention for directly linking the issue to political opponents, a charge that is likely to trigger a response from the Samajwadi Party. Political observers note that Azamgarh has frequently been at the center of political narratives in Uttar Pradesh, especially during election cycles. Statements connecting criminal or terror-related investigations to political parties often become contentious and generate sharp reactions across the political spectrum.
