‘Build a memorial for Bharathiraja’: Lyricist Vairamuthu urges CM Vijay and Tamil Nadu government after veteran director’s passing

Veteran lyricist Vairamuthu has made an emotional appeal to the Tamil Nadu government, requesting that a memorial be built in honour of legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja. The acclaimed director, fondly known as “Iyakkunar Imayam,” passed away on June 10 after battling age-related health woes. He was laid to rest with full state honours at his native village in Theni district. Weeks after his passing, Vairamuthu visited the burial site and revealed his plans to meet Chief Minister Vijay to secure a permanent landmark honoring the director’s contributions to Indian cinema.

Vairamuthu appeals for a memorial at Bharathiraja’s burial site

After paying his respects at Bharathiraja’s memorial, Vairamuthu urged the state government to preserve the site by constructing a permanent memorial. Sharing his thoughts on social media, he wrote, “This is where the great Himalaya of Tamil cinema rests. Sleep peacefully after a lifetime of tireless work.” He further appealed, “I request the government to build a memorial for Bharathiraja at this very place. I will not hesitate to meet Chief Minister Vijay personally to place this request.” His heartfelt appeal has sparked conversations about honouring one of Tamil cinema’s greatest filmmakers with a lasting tribute.

Vairamuthu recalls Bharathiraja’s everlasting legacy

In his emotional note, Vairamuthu spoke about Bharathiraja’s phenomenal contribution to the Tamil film industry and the great void created after his passing. He called the late director a visionary whose creativity made a mark in filmmaking by bringing rural life from Tamil Nadu to the whole world through films. The lyricist, while mourning over the loss of Bharathiraja, stated that the “chariot of art” lost its guiding horses.

Vairamuthu hopes for a lasting tribute to the legendary filmmaker

Moreover, Vairamuthu expressed the hope that Bharathiraja’s final resting place would one day serve as a landmark of culture acknowledging the director’s film legacy. He explained that a memorial built at his final resting place would serve as an example of inspiration for future directors and cinema-lovers. The people from Theni will be proud when such a memorial is made in memory of the legend.
