Watch | Ravi floodwater submerges Kartarpur corridor, enters gurdwara complex; Guru Granth Sahib safe

Delhi govt minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has confirmed that the “saroop” of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is safe, adding that eight people have been rescued from the gurudwara and sent to Narowal

Floodwaters from the Ravi River entered the complex of Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in the Kartarpur corridor of Narowal district of Pakistan. The revered site houses the holy scripture Guru Granth Sahib.

Paramjit Singh Sarna, former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, told the Times of India that the ground floor of the gurudwara, which includes the site where Guru Nanak Dev died, the langar hall and residential quarters, is completely submerged in water.

However, the “parkash (installation)” of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is carried out on the first floor of the gurdwara, which is about 12 feet above ground level. “This means that the ‘saroop’ (holy scripture) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib remains safe,” he said.

Sarna said that flooding of this magnitude was last seen during the early 1980s and that this is the first time in decades that the overflowing of the river has deluged an entire floor of the complex.

The Pakistan military announced it had launched a “major rescue operation” to evacuate pilgrims, staff, and local residents. Boats were deployed, and hundreds of people were transported to safer areas.

The Akal Takht’s officiating jathedar, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, has requested the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) to submit a report on the damage to the gurdwara. He also directed the PSGPC to coordinate with the Pakistan Evacuee Trust Property Board to assess the extent of the damage.
