Sign of ‘priority’: India’s envoy to US positive after Trump names ‘trusted aide’ Gor as ambassador in Delhi

Trump has described Gor as a “great friend” and one of the most influential figures in his administration. Gor, who currently serves as director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, will remain in the role until his confirmation

US President Donald Trump has nominated close ally Sergio Gor to be the next US Ambassador to India, a move that is being seen as a sign of “priority” by New Delhi. India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra has backed Trump’s decision to put up Gor in the post, saying that he is the president’s “most trusted allies.”

“I welcome that President Trump is sending one of his most trusted aides, @SergioGor to serve as the next US Ambassador to India,” Kwatra said, adding that his nomination would be perceived as “a commitment to strengthen the bridges and deepen the bonds of friendship between our two countries.”

India-US ties hit a snag after Trump raised tariffs to 50 per cent, punishing India for purchasing Russian oil. The president and his colleagues have blamed India for “fuelling the Russian war on Ukraine” by buying oil from Moscow.

However, both the countries are showing signs of resolution after Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi his “great friend”, not once but twice, adding that the US is committed in settling trade differences with India.

Who is Sergio Gor?

Trump has described Gor as a “great friend” and one of the most influential figures in his administration.

Gor, who currently serves as director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, will remain in the role until his confirmation, Trump said.

The president credited Gor with playing a central role in his “historic presidential campaigns,” publishing his best-selling books, and leading a major pro-Trump super PAC.

Gor began his political career working as a spokesman for Republican lawmakers including Michele Bachmann, Steve King, and Randy Forbes. In 2013, he became communications director for Senator Rand Paul’s PAC, RANDPAC, and continued to work closely with the Kentucky senator.

In 2021, he co-founded Winning Team Publishing, a conservative publishing house that has released multiple Trump-related titles such as Letters to Trump, Our Journey Together, and Save America. He also reportedly led Right for America, a pro-Trump PAC.

In November 2024, Trump appointed Gor as director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, a position from which he will transition once confirmed as ambassador.
