A love marriage resulted in the death of a man after he was severely beaten by his in-laws in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, news agency ANI reported.

The tragic incident is said to have taken place in Harsi village which falls under the jurisdiction of Belgada police station. The deceased has been identified as Om Prakash (25).

It is learnt that Om Prakash had a love marriage with a woman of the same village around a year ago against the wishes of the woman’s family.

ANI citing police reported that the couple had been living in Dabra following their wedding. Om Prakash returned to his village after around a year on August 19. During his stay in the village, his in-laws thrashed him with sticks, leaving him with grievous injuries.

Soon after, he was rushed to Jaya Arogya Hospital (JAH) but succumbed to injuries in the intervening night of August 23 and August 24, ANI reported.

According to a report in Times Of India, Om Prakash had married Shivani Ojha through a court marriage. TOI citing SP Dharamveer Yadav reported that both the families belonged to the OBC categories.

The outlet reported that the victim had returned to his native village along with his wife to visit his ailing mother. During the visit, he went to his in-laws’ house to convince them to accept the marriage but instead, he was allegedly attacked with sticks and an axe by her relatives, TOI reported citing the SP.

Citing police, TOI further mentioned that the couple had earlier eloped in 2023. After Shivani expressed her wish to live with him, the couple stayed at different places before getting married.

City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Robin Jain said that the couple had been living at a rented house in Dabra and the woman’s family was unhappy with their marriage.

“The incident was reported in Harsi village under Belgada police station limits, where a man and a woman of the same village had a love marriage around a year ago. The family members of the woman were against the marriage, and therefore, the couple was living in a rented house in Dabra. A few days ago, they returned to their village, and the family members of the woman assaulted the man with a stick severely, leaving him seriously injured,” ANI quoted CSP Jain as saying.

Based on the complaint of victim’s wife, police have registered a case against four people and arrested her father and uncle in relation to the crime, the officer said.

Police said efforts were underway to nab the remaining two accused. Further investigation into the case is underway.
