A 35-year-old man in Maharashtra’s Latur allegedly died by suicide by jumping into the Manjara River out of fear that reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) will be impacted by the government resolution issued recently.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister and OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal on Thursday took to X and informed about the incident, also adding that he will be visiting the family of the victim, identified as Bharat Mahadev Karad, in Latur today, September 12.

“In the backdrop of this tragic incident, tomorrow, on Friday, September 12, 2025, I am going to Latur to meet the bereaved Karad family members and console them,” he said in a post on X on Thursday.

“The current developments regarding OBC reservation are making ordinary OBC individuals uneasy; this is the reality. But justice will surely be obtained through the Constitution and the law; we will have to fight for it. We are firm in that resolve. Therefore, I earnestly appeal to all OBC brethren in Maharashtra not to take such extreme steps,” he added in his post.

Meanwhile, the police have also recovered a note in which the victim wrote that he was ending his life so that his sacrifice ensures his community gets justice, reported PTI, citing officials.

Karad believed the GR, which allows Marathas to get Kunbi certificates under certain conditions, would wipe out reservations for OBCs, his family members said.

According to the claims made by eyewitnesses, he shouted slogans in favour of the OBC quota before jumping into the river.

A case has been registered, and a further probe is underway, the police official said.
