The Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives and left more than 100 injured, has now acquired a sharp political edge, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting the tragedy in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.

CM Stalin criticised Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s swift visit to Karur, contrasting it with what he called the Centre’s indifference during earlier crises such as disasters in Tamil Nadu.

“When Tamil Nadu was struck by three major disasters that affected thousands, the Union government neither visited nor provided any funds. But now, with elections approaching, they rush to Karur,” he said.

Stalin further alleged that the BJP was quick to dispatch inquiry teams to Tamil Nadu while ignoring major tragedies elsewhere, such as the Manipur riots and the deaths during the Kumbh Mela. He added, “The BJP, which did not send inquiry commissions for the Manipur riots, the Gujarat incidents, or the Kumbh Mela deaths, is now promptly sending a team to Karur — not out of genuine concern for Tamil Nadu, but purely because elections are due next year.”

He accused the Centre of harbouring hostility towards the state, citing grievances over GST, NEET and NEP, which he said had undermined Tamil Nadu’s economic and educational interests.

BJP responds to Karur stampede

BJP MP Anurag Thakur, part of the NDA delegation to Karur, wrote to Stalin demanding accountability and detailed reports. His letter sought clarity on the causes of the incident, crowd management lapses, and preventive measures to avert similar tragedies.

“I urge you to take complete charge of the situation and ensure the authorities provide a report at the earliest,” Thakur wrote, pressing for transparency and corrective action.

The Karur stampede occurred on 27 September during a rally by actor-turned-politician Vijay of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Over 27,000 people gathered, despite permission for only 10,000. A delayed appearance by Vijay triggered a surge towards his convoy, collapsing fragile structures and sparking panic. Ten minors were among the 41 victims.

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a judicial probe and announced compensation for victims. Meanwhile, TVK has suspended campaign activities as a mark of respect.
