Hillary Clinton says she’d nominate Trump for Nobel prize if he ends Ukraine war

Clinton — who ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential election — said she would support his nomination, provided the deal does not involve ceding Ukrainian territory to Russian President Vladimir Putin

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he succeeds in securing a lasting end to the war in Ukraine.

In an interview to Fox News, Clinton — who ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential election — said she would support his nomination, provided the deal does not involve ceding Ukrainian territory to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“If he could bring about the end to this terrible war… if he could end it without putting Ukraine in a position where it had to concede its territory to the aggressor… could really stand up to Putin,” Fox News quoted her as saying.

Clinton added that the upcoming summit in Alaska could be Trump’s opportunity to firmly tell Putin that a ceasefire is essential and that no territorial concessions between Russia and Ukraine will be accepted.

“If President Trump were the architect of that, I’d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize. Because my goal here is to not allow capitulation to Putin,” she said.

Her remarks came ahead of Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, where the two leaders are set to discuss the future of war-ravaged Ukraine.

Trump has framed the summit as a step toward ending the conflict and hinted that a territorial exchange could be part of a possible resolution.

Asked aboard Air Force One en route to Anchorage whether territorial swaps were being considered, the US president said, “They will be discussed, but I’ve got to let Ukraine make that decision, and I think they’ll make a proper decision.”

“But I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine,” Trump said, adding, “If I weren’t president, Putin would take all of Ukraine. But he’s not going to do it.”
