Indian Air Force Day: History and Significance

Launched as an auxiliary force under British rule on October 8, 1932, the Indian Air Force was originally named the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). The RIAF’s maiden operational flight took off on April 1, 1933, carrying six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys.

The RIAF made significant contributions during World War II and earned its ‘Royal’ prefix in 1945 for its service. When India gained independence on August 15, 1947, after 200 years of British colonial rule, and became a republic in 1950, the prefix was officially removed, and the force was formally established as the Indian Air Force.

The IAF has a proud history of playing a major role in some of India’s most critical conflicts. These include the Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999, as well as the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The force also took part in significant operations such as Operation Poomalai in 1987 and Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil war in 1999.

  • “Strength, honor, and bravery define our Air Force. Saluting the guardians of the sky on this special day.”
  • “With wings of determination, our Air Force soars to protect and serve. Happy Air Force Day!”
  • “The wings of our nation’s defense – our Air Force. Happy Air Force Day to the fearless protectors!”
  • “In the blue skies, we find freedom. In the Air Force, we find heroes.”

5 Films Based On The Indian Air Force

  1. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl: The film is based on the life of Indian Air Force pilot Gunjan Saxena, who became the first Indian female combat pilot in the Kargil War of 1999.
  2. Fighter: It is based on the IAF’s heroic contributions in the 2019 military conflict between India and Pakistan following the Pulwama attack on Indian armed forces. The film depicts the execution of Balakot airstrike on suspected terrorist camps in Pakistan.
  3. Bhuj: The Pride of India: Another film based on IAF’s incredible work, Bhuj: The Pride of India is based on the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. It highlights the story of former Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, who was in charge of the Bhuj Air Force Base when 300 local women of Madhapar Village helped reconstruct the landing strip of the base within 72 hours.
  4. Rang De Basanti: The iconic film is based on a carefree group of college students, who experience a strong patriotic awakening after their Indian Air Force pilot friend dies in a plane crash, exposing the corruption behind the scenes.
  5. Operation Valentine: It is another movie based on the 2019 Pulwama attacks and the retaliatory Balakot Air Strikes carried out by the Indian Air Force.
