Heated Debate On Kids Using Mobile Phones
After details of the case surfaced, it caught public attention online. A user highlighting the case on X shared, “A 15-year-old boy raped a 5-year-old girl after watching porn on his mobile phone. This news from Prayagraj is a warning bell. On one hand, mobiles have countless benefits, but the harms are also very significant. The boy says that he watched porn on the mobile, then called the girl by offering her a toffee, and then did a dirty act with her. When the girl started crying from the pain and became drenched in blood, the boy left her and ran away. What do you think, is the mobile phone harmful for children or not?!”
The post gained significant traction and reignited a long-standing debate about children’s exposure to mobile phones.
One user suggested, “There should be an age limit for using mobile phones.”
Another said, “Nowadays, parents themselves are spoiling their children by giving them mobiles. Parents should understand what effect this will have on the children. Keep children away from mobiles as much as possible.
“How is porn reaching children? Will just shutting down porn sites stop everything? The answer is no. If you shut down the sites, people will use VPNs. If the government really wants to block it, then block its servers—whether on the web or apps, block every type of access so that no one can reach there,” someone demanded.
“Nowadays, every household has a mobile phone. To restrict children, there is also a family control system in mobile phones; it should be kept on in mode. Whether the phone belongs to the mother or the father, that system should remain on it so that websites of this type cannot be opened at all. Second suggestion: Keep children away from phones until they are 18 years old,” read another suggestion.
Effects Of Mobile Phones On School-Age Children
Experts have repeatedly warned that unrestricted mobile phone use among children can lead to both health and behavioural issues. Spending too much time on mobile phones can strain children’s eyes, disturb their sleep, reduce focus and slow down language or cognitive development. They also become dependent on mobile phones which ultimately affects their studies and social life.
Along with these physical and psychological effects, one of the biggest dangers comes from easy access to inappropriate content. Children can stumble upon pornographic material accidentally or explore it out of curiosity. Many reports suggest that even children as young as eight or nine have already come across adult content online. Seeing such content can cause feelings of shock, anger, embarrassment and increased anxiety or depression.
Cyberbullying and online pressure from friends also affect children’s mental health and these problems often go unnoticed by parents or teachers.
Helping Children Use Mobile Phones Safely
Parents and teachers should actively guide and supervise how children use mobile phones. Some precautions such as setting limits on screen time, using parental controls and talking openly about internet safety can reduce risks.
They should also educate children about responsible online behaviour and the importance of reporting anything inappropriate.
