Seventy-one-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court on Monday, has said that he was “ready to face jail” and claimed he acted under a “divine force,” Hindustan Times reported.

Kishore, who lives in Mayur Vihar, insisted he had no political affiliations, adding that he was furious at the CJI over his remarks during a recent hearing on the restoration of a beheaded Lord Vishnu idol at Khajuraho’s Javari temple in Madhya Pradesh.

“It would have been better if I were in jail. My family is very unhappy with what I did. They are unable to understand,” he was quoted as saying.

“I couldn’t sleep after that judgment,” Kishore told, referring to the Vishnu idol in the Khajuraho case.

“The almighty was asking me every night how I could rest after such an insult.”

He added that he was further provoked after he learnt about the CJI’s speech in Mauritius, where Gavai said that “India’s legal system operates under the rule of law, not under the rule of bulldozer.”

According to the Delhi Police, Kishore was released after the Supreme Court registry declined to press charges against him.

He was questioned for three hours following the incident.

Soon after the incident, the lawyer had shouted “‘Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan’ (India will not tolerate the disrespect of the Sanatana Dharma)”, and was escorted out of the courtroom.

Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained calm, telling the courtroom, “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”
