Michael Schumacher’s present condition leaked? What we know after a £12m blackmail attempt and missing hard drive

Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher’s health and current condition has been fiercely guarded by his family since he met with a life-altering skiing accident more than a decade ago. A blackmail attempt and a missing hard drive, however, have led to speculation of his true condition being leaked online.

Little is known of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher’s health and condition since he met with a life-altering accident during a skiing trip 12 years ago. The Schumacher family has fiercely guarded Michael’s privacy since he suffered a serious brain injury while skiing in the French Alps in 2013, a year after he brought the curtains down on his legendary F1 career.

The former Ferrari star had reportedly made his first public appearance since the accident at the wedding of his daughter Gina Maria at the Schumacher family villa in Majorca, Spain exactly a year ago. Guests were required to leave their mobile phones at the entrance to the venue in order to prevent the possibility of unauthorised photos being taken.

Reports of his appearance, which got the F1 community buzzing, however were later dismissed as “fake news” by those close to the Schumachers. But the interest that it had generated, which reflected in social media trends in October last year, showed that plenty of Formula 1 fans still cared about Schumacher and his well-being, and that the intrigue surrounding his current condition was still there.

Missing hard drive in £12 million blackmail plot

The secrecy surrounding Schumacher’s current condition have even led to blackmail attempts over the years. The most recent of those attempts had led to the prosecution of a nightclub bouncer and his son as well as a former family bodyguard in late 2024, resulting in a sentencing in February this year.

Yilmaz Tozturkan, a 53-year-old nightclub bouncer, was sentenced to three years in prison for demanding £12 million from the Schumacher family, according to The Guardian. Tozturkan had threatened to leak 900 personal photos and 600 videos as well as confidential medical records to the dark web if his demand was not met.

His son Daniel Lins, a computer expert, was handed a suspended six-month sentence while 53-year-old Markus Fritsche, who worked for the security company hired to safeguard the Schumacher residence, received a two-year suspended sentence after being accused of plotting to steal the sensitive data before handing them over to Tozturkan.

Schumacher’s lawyer Thilo Damm, however, revealed that the family faces the possibility of another blackmail attempt with a hard drive continuing to remain unaccounted for despite extensive searches in the defendants’ homes.

“We don’t know where the missing hard drive is. I don’t have a crystal ball but there is the possibility of another threat through the backdoor,” Damm had said, adding at the time that the family had planned to appeal against the “lenient sentences”.

What is the F1 legend’s current condition like?

Several reports claim leaked photos and videos paint a better picture of Schumacher and his current condition, with some claiming he has shown some improvement in recent years. And the confirmation of a missing hard drive have only fuelled more rumours of Schumacher’s true condition being published online.

Those reports, however, remain speculative at best, with none of the stolen content being authenticated or linked to Schumacher’s present condition so far.

Schumacher, who had won seven world titles during his career and remains the joint-most successful driver in F1 history along with Lewis Hamilton, remains under the constant supervision of a dedicated team of health professionals at his Lake Geneva residence in Switzerland.

His wife Corinna and the rest of his family remains highly protective of his privacy more than a decade after the accident, with only a select few friends are allowed to visit Schumacher, including Jean Todt and Ross Brawn – Ferrari team principals during his decade-long run with the ‘Prancing Horse’.
