Many people experience acidity and gas after meals. A common quick fix is reaching for a cold drink or soda, which may provide temporary relief. But does it actually solve the problem—or is it just a myth?
Dr Anil Arora, Chairman of the Institute of Liver Gastroenterology and Pancreatic Biliary Sciences at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, explains that cold drinks contain extremely high amounts of sugar and carbon dioxide. They also include acids, artificial flavours, and various chemicals, all of which can be harmful to the stomach and liver.

Contrary to popular belief, cold drinks do not cure acidity or gas. In fact, the sugar and acid content can overstimulate the digestive system, increasing acid secretion. Long-term consumption may worsen stomach issues, trigger fatty liver, and cause complications for people with diabetes.
Healthier Ways to Relieve Acidity
Instead of soda, doctors recommend natural remedies to ease acidity and gas:
Coconut water
Buttermilk
Fennel or cumin water
Mint or basil tea
Milk
Along with these drinks, it’s important to avoid excessively spicy foods. Eating slowly and chewing food thoroughly helps digestion and prevents acidity flare-ups.
If acidity or gas persists, it is crucial not to ignore the symptoms. Consulting a doctor ensures the problem is properly diagnosed and treated. Personalised medical guidance can prevent complications and offer long-term relief rather than temporary fixes.
While a cold drink may seem refreshing after a heavy meal, it is not a cure for acidity. On the contrary, it can aggravate stomach and liver problems over time. Opt for natural remedies, maintain healthy eating habits, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
