14 killed as heavy rain triggers multiple landslides in Darjeeling; PM Modi expresses grief

At least 14 people have died and one remains missing after heavy rain triggered multiple landslides in Darjeeling’s Mirik and Sukhiya areas. Rescue operations are underway, though officials warn the toll may rise as bad weather hampers relief efforts.

Heavy rain has battered North Bengal, triggering multiple landslides in Mirik and Sukhiya in Darjeeling that have claimed at least 14 lives, with one person still missing. Authorities fear the toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Deaths have been reported from Mirik, Jorebunglow, Sukhiapokhri, Darjeeling Sadar, and Pulbazar, while one person from the Sukhiapokhri area remains untraced. Rescue efforts led by the Darjeeling District Police are being hindered by relentless rain and treacherous terrain.
