Kareena Kapoor has been a big name in Bollywood for over two decades. She is beloved for her genuineness and candidness, and she frequently sheds light on her personal life through interviews and social media updates.

In a recent conversation, the actress spoke with The Nod Magazine about books that have made an impression on her. Her reply, as frank as ever, was to speak of how she prefers pulse-pounding crime novels over conventional self-help or inspirational books.

Kareena’s Crime Thriller Pick

Kareena said, “The one book that I found transformative? I don’t read those kinds of books. I enjoy crazy crime thrillers, you know. I am reading Jessica Bull’s latest crime thriller. It is called A Fortune Most Fatal. It is a really cool period crime drama. World War II kind of setting. It is about sisters and brothers and their fortune , who inherits what. So, it is taking up all my time.”

Released in March this year, A Fortune Most Fatal is the second installment in Jessica Bull’s Miss Austen Investigates series. The series combines historical settings and complex mysteries, drawing readers in with suspenseful plotting and authentic period detail.

The initial title in the series, The Hapless Milliner, was released last year and introduced readers to Bull’s style, which combines witty detectiveism with historical insight.

About A Fortune Most Fatal

Set in Kent in 1797, the novel traces Jane Austen as she takes a summer holiday with her wayward brother, Neddy. Charged with protecting her brother’s legacy from the rich widow Mrs Knight, Jane soon discovers that a mysterious young woman threatens the family fortune.

Based on the book’s summary, Jane must discover who this false Jane is, to save the fortunes and fate of her whole family. But when her quest becomes a dark and perilous one, can she find the solution and stay alive?

The book weaves together suspense, historical mystery, and family conflict, holding readers captive as Jane Austen walks the fine line between danger and deceit.

Kareena’s Take on Reading

Kareena’s selection reflects her penchant for plot-oriented, suspenseful tales over traditional inspirational or self-help volumes. Her appreciation of Bull’s writing demonstrates the appeal of historical crime dramas to even the busiest lives, including one of India’s most in-demand stars.

By revealing what she reads, Kareena also provides glimpses of her downtime and hobbies outside of acting. Crime thrillers, and especially those that are set in historical situations, are apparently a favourite pastime.

With A Fortune Most Fatal already engaging her, readers can be encouraged to read Jessica Bull’s series for themselves. The combination of intrigue, historical settings, and astute plotting makes it a compelling read both for lovers of crime fiction and historical fiction alike.
