The body of a 17-year-old girl, who went missing last week, was recovered from a river in Madhya Pradesh. Police suspect it to be a case of honour killing.

It is learnt that the teenager was allegedly shot dead in her home and her body dumped in a river. The victim, Divya Sikarwar, was reportedly killed by her family in Morena district.

Police investigations revealed her father, Bharat Sikarwar, allegedly wrapped her body in plastic, tied it to a stone, and threw it into the Kunwari river, 30 km from their home.

A class 12 student, Divya belonged to an upper-caste Kshatriya family and was friends with a young man from a backward caste, which police suspect may have provoked her family, indicating an honour killing, according to a report in NDTV.

When questioned, Divya’s parents provided contradictory accounts. They initially claimed she died from electrocution by a fan, later calling it a suicide. Forensic experts who examined her partially decomposed body suspect a point-blank gunshot wound to the head.

In a shocking twist, Divya’s younger brother and sister, both minors, have been missing since the incident. Police believe their disappearance, coupled with the parents’ changing statements and the disposal of the body, strengthens the murder case. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

NDTV quoted Assistant Superintendent of Police Surendra Pal Singh Dabar as saying, “Divya’s body has been recovered from the Kunwari River and sent for post-mortem. Only after the forensic report will we be able to confirm the cause of death.”.

The family stated that Divya managed the household finances and had access to a pistol registered under her uncle’s name, kept in her cupboard. The investigation is ongoing to determine if the same weapon was used in the killing.

Meanwhile, Bharat Sikarwar told the media that he found her injured and rushed her to the hospital, but she died on the way adding that he cremated the body in the river as he was afraid.

Such incidents are not uncommon in the Chambal-Gwalior region. In June 2025, an elderly man in Morena allegedly shot dead his granddaughter, Malishkha, for being in a relationship with a boy from a different caste. Earlier, in January 2025, 20-year-old Tanu Gurjar was reportedly killed by her father and cousin in Gwalior just days before her wedding. In another tragic case from June 2023, a young woman and her lover were murdered by her father, who then disposed of their bodies in the Chambal River.
