A 40-year-old man has been charged after a gunman opened fire from a boat into a waterfront restaurant in Southport, North Carolina, killing three people and injuring at least five others on Saturday night.

Authorities identified the suspect as Nigel Max Edge, who faces three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder. Southport’s public information officer, ChyAnn Ketchum, confirmed the charges on Sunday.

Police said Edge carried out the shooting in a “highly premeditated” manner.

“We believe this was a targeted location,” Southport Police Chief Todd Coring told reporters, adding that the suspect acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Investigators said a boat with a lone occupant stopped in front of the American Fish Company restaurant on the Cape Fear River around 9:30 p.m. before shots were fired at patrons.

The boat then sped off toward Oak Island.

The US Coast Guard later spotted a man matching the shooter’s description at a public ramp in Oak Island shortly after 10 pm. He was detained and handed over to Southport police.

Officials said Edge, a resident of Oak Island, is known to law enforcement but has no significant criminal history.

He reportedly told investigators he was a combat veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), though those claims have not been independently confirmed.

Oak Island Police Chief Charlie Morris said Edge was a familiar figure in the community, often seen near the town pier, and had filed “numerous” lawsuits against the police department and town officials in recent years.

District Attorney Jon David said at least one of the victims remains in critical condition. Authorities noted that several victims were vacationers visiting the area.

Edge is also facing weapons-related charges, with officials indicating more charges may follow as the investigation continues. The names of the deceased victims have not yet been released.
