‘Was really fun’: How an Indian-origin man chased and stabbed a sex offender in US

An Indian-origin man, Varun Suresh, allegedly murdered 71-year-old David Brimmer, a registered child sex offender in California. Chillingly, Suresh reportedly confessed to police that he had long harboured a desire to kill the old man, and he ‘didn’t feel sad at all’

In the US, a shocking murder case has surfaced where an Indian-origin man allegedly killed a 71-year-old after discovering his name on a public sex offender registry, according to court filings.

The accused, identified as 29-year-old Varun Suresh, has been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of David Brimmer, a registered child sex offender.

Court documents released on Monday revealed chilling details. Suresh reportedly confessed to police that he had long harboured a desire to kill a sex offender, telling investigators that it was “honestly really fun.”

Here’s how it all unfolded.

Investigators revealed that it all began when Varun Suresh used California’s Megan’s Law database to track down David Brimmer, who had previously served nine years in prison for child sexual assault in 1995, in California’s Fremont.

On the day of the incident, Suresh allegedly armed himself with a knife and disguised his intentions. He posed as a certified public accountant (CPA) going door-to-door, carrying a bag, notebook, and even a cup of coffee to appear convincing.

When he reached Brimmer’s home, Suresh struck up a conversation, shook his hand, and chillingly remarked, “I knew I had the right guy.” He then forced Brimmer back inside.

Brimmer managed to break free and ran from his home in a desperate attempt to seek help. He tried to flag down a passing vehicle but failed.

According to police, the 71-year-old then sprinted two blocks before collapsing inside a neighbour’s garage and kitchen. Suresh followed closely behind, stabbing him in the neck while reportedly ordering him to “repent.”

Even as Brimmer struggled to crawl away, Suresh slit his throat to, in his words, “make sure it was done.”

Despite the swift arrival of emergency responders, Brimmer died from his injuries. The Independent reported that he had suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack.

The chilling confession

After his arrest, Suresh reportedly told investigators that he targeted Brimmer because of his age and vulnerability, describing the act of killing him as “honestly really fun,” according to CBS News.

Suresh allegedly admitted that he had no plans to flee the scene and would have contacted the police himself had they not arrived. “I’m hoping that because (the victim is) a pedophile… like, everyone hates pedophiles… so like, it should be cool. It should be cool,” he reportedly said.

In post-arrest interviews, Suresh showed no remorse, telling investigators he was “not sorry” and “didn’t feel sad at all.”

Authorities also found screenshots on Suresh’s phone of multiple profiles from California’s Megan’s Law website, including Brimmer’s. The screenshot of Brimmer’s profile was taken roughly 45 minutes before the first 911 call reporting the stabbing, police said.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Suresh with murder, residential burglary, and use of a deadly weapon. Officials have classified the incident as isolated, noting there is no ongoing threat to the community, and Suresh remains in custody as prosecutors continue reviewing the case.

Not the first run-in with the law

This is not the first time Suresh has come into conflict with authorities.

In 2021, he was arrested for a fake bomb threat, criminal threats, and burglary after leaving a bag at the Hyatt Place in Fremont.

At that time, he reportedly told police that he had been “hunting” the CEO of the Hyatt chain because “he was a paedophile and wanted to kill him.”
