For centuries, Ayurveda has regarded water stored in copper vessels as a natural medicine with multiple health benefits. The practice, followed in many households even today, involves filling a copper vessel with water at night and consuming it the next morning. Experts claim that during this period, the water becomes infused with copper ions, a process that enhances its therapeutic properties.

Ayurveda practitioners explain that copper-infused water, often referred to as tamra jal, plays a vital role in balancing various body functions. “Copper has antibacterial and antiviral properties and is also effective in reducing inflammation,” say experts. Beyond these, it is believed to aid digestion, improve metabolism, and strengthen the immune system.

Improves Digestion and Detoxifies The Body

According to Ayurveda, drinking water stored in copper vessels helps stimulate digestion. “If consumed on an empty stomach every morning, it can reduce problems such as acidity, indigestion, constipation, and bloating,” experts note. Copper-infused water is also believed to speed up metabolism, thereby improving nutrient absorption and helping the body flush out toxins.

Supports Weight Loss

Those seeking weight management may also benefit. Copper water reportedly enhances metabolic activity, ensuring quicker digestion and preventing excess fat accumulation. Over time, it may help in burning stored fat, aiding gradual weight reduction.

Boosts Heart Health

Regular consumption is also linked to cardiovascular benefits. “Copper helps regulate blood pressure, reduces bad cholesterol, and prevents arterial blockages,” Ayurveda practitioners claim. Such properties may lower the risk of heart disease and ensure smoother functioning of the heart.

Promotes Glowing Skin

The antioxidant properties of copper are known to assist in repairing skin cells, reducing fine lines, and delaying signs of ageing. Consuming copper water daily is said to rejuvenate the skin, reduce acne, and impart a natural glow.

Strengthens Immunity

Copper also plays a role in building immunity. “It equips the body to fight seasonal flu and infections more effectively,” say experts. Drinking copper-infused water regularly, especially during weather changes, is believed to reduce the likelihood of falling ill.

Who Should Avoid It

Ayurveda specialists caution that copper water is not universally suitable. People suffering from liver ailments, thyroid disorders, or copper allergies should avoid it unless advised by a physician. Excessive intake can also lead to copper toxicity, which may prove harmful. Moreover, sour substances like milk, curd, or lemonade must never be stored in copper vessels, as they may react with the metal and affect health adversely.
