Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Friday offered prayers at the Ram temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. He was welcomed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath upon his arrival.

Earlier in the day, the Mauritius Prime Minister visited the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

UP Cabinet Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, who along with Adityanath, welcomed Ramgoolam, said, “A large number of people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar went to Mauritius during British rule and are in the mainstream there. They have kept the cultural identity of India alive there. We welcome the Prime Minister of Mauritius in Ayodhya.”

Ramgoolam is currently on a state visit to India from September 9 to September 16. He also held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, and both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, healthcare, digital technology, energy, maritime security and more.

The Mauritius Prime Minister is set to visit Dehradun on September 13 and 14, and visit to Tirupati on September 15. The delegation will arrive in Delhi to continue the official programme later that day.

Ramgoolam and his spouse will then lay wreaths at Rajghat and Sadaiv Atal, visit the New Parliament Building, and hold calls with the President and a Cabinet Minister. The visit will conclude with their departure from Delhi, according to the MEA.

Notably, this will be the first overseas bilateral visit of Prime Minister Ramgoolam to India in his current term. He had earlier visited India in May 2014 as the only non-SAARC leader invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers.
