Tucked roughly 5,000 light years away in the constellation Centaurus lies a place far colder than anything found on Earth. Known as the Boomerang Nebula, this dying star system holds the record for the coldest known naturally occurring object in the entire universe, sitting at just one degree above absolute zero, the theoretical point at which all particle motion stops. That works out to around minus 272 degrees Celsius, making it more than three times colder than the lowest natural temperature ever recorded on Earth, in East Antarctica, and even colder than the faint background radiation left over from the Big Bang itself.

How astronomers first identified this extreme cold

According to a paper published by astronomers Raghvendra Sahai and Lars Åke Nyman in 1997, later confirmed and detailed further in observations described by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Boomerang Nebula was measured using the fifteen metre Swedish ESO Submillimetre Telescope in Chile and found to be even colder than the cosmic microwave background, the faint leftover radiation that fills the entire universe at a near uniform 2.7 degrees above absolute zero. Finding any object colder than this background radiation is highly unusual, since most of deep space is gradually warmed by that same lingering afterglow from the early universe.

A dying star producing its own super-cold gas

The nebula’s extreme temperature comes from its violent formation process. According to the ALMA Observatory, the Boomerang Nebula formed from an ancient red giant star nearing the end of its life, expelling gas outward at speeds around ten times faster than a typical dying star would produce on its own. Researchers using the Atacama Large Millimeter submillimeter Array, known as ALMA, found evidence suggesting this extreme outflow may have been triggered by a smaller companion star plunging directly into the heart of the larger red giant, ejecting most of its outer material into space in the process.

Why rapid expansion creates such intense cold

The nebula’s temperature drops so dramatically because of a straightforward principle of physics: gas cools rapidly as it expands outward at extreme speed. According to the peer reviewed study titled ALMA Observations of the Coldest Place in the Universe, the Boomerang Nebula, published in The Astrophysical Journal, the nebula consists of a central hourglass-shaped structure surrounded by a broader, patchy region of this ultra-cold outflowing gas. The unusually high expansion speed strips away thermal energy from the gas far more efficiently than in a typical dying star, allowing the outflow to plunge below the background temperature of space itself.

What ALMA revealed about its true shape

Earlier images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope showed the nebula with a distinctive bowtie or double-lobed appearance, which is how it earned the name Boomerang. However, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the newer, more detailed ALMA observations revealed that this visible light structure only tells part of the story, since the twin lobes seen in optical images may actually be something of an illusion created by how light scatters through the nebula’s material, rather than reflecting its true underlying shape.

A rare and short-lived phase in a star’s life

Follow up research, described in a study titled The Coldest Place in the Universe, Probing the Ultra Cold Outflow and Dusty Disk in the Boomerang Nebula, published in The Astrophysical Journal, found that the star’s total mass loss in this ultra cold outflow amounts to more than three times the mass of our sun, with the original star itself estimated to have been at least four times the sun’s mass before this process began. Astronomer Lars Åke Nyman, a co-author on the research, has noted that objects like the Boomerang Nebula likely exist elsewhere in the universe, but can only sustain such extreme cold for a relatively short period in cosmic terms, making this a rare opportunity to observe the phenomenon directly.

Why this discovery continues to intrigue astronomers

The Boomerang Nebula remains a valuable natural laboratory for understanding the final stages of a dying star’s life, offering insight into a brief transitional phase, lasting roughly a thousand years, during which stars shed their outer layers before eventually forming what is known as a planetary nebula. Its record-setting cold, colder than the emptiness of space itself, continues to raise questions for astronomers about exactly how common such extreme stellar events might be throughout the wider universe, and how many similar cosmic freezers may be quietly forming and fading in other corners of the galaxy right now.
