The Tata Tiago aims to revive Tata’s hatchback appeal, but sales remain under pressure despite recent updates.

Tata Motors PV’s efforts to revive its hatchback portfolio through new product interventions have yet to translate into meaningful sales growth, as sales in the company’s compact car portfolio plunged 17.6 per cent year-on-year during the April-June quarter of FY27. However, the recent launches could begin showing results in the coming months.

Domestic sales of the Indian automaker’s compact car portfolio, comprising the Tiago, Tigor and Altroz, fell from 32,801 units in Q1 FY26 to 27,017 units in the corresponding period this year.

Production also dropped 17.6 per cent YoY to 30,163 units in Q1 FY27 as against 35,496 units. However, segment shipments rose sharply to 2,038 units from 548 units a year earlier.

On the contrary, Maruti Suzuki reported a remarkable revival of small cars, with the Alto and S-Presso models growing 140 per cent YoY in May 2026.

As part of its recent re-entry into the South African market, Tata Motors PV introduced the Tiago, Punch, Curvv and Harrier. The Tiago is currently the only hatchback exported by the company.

Tiago refresh in focus

The decline in segment sales comes on the heels of Tata Motors refreshing its hatchback lineup in May with the launch of the new Tiago EV, offered with a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, alongside updates to the Tiago CNG and ICE variants. At the launch, Tata Motors PV’s Shailesh Chandra said the company sees the hatchback as “the gateway to personal mobility” for millions of Indian families.

The real issue is not that customers abandoned hatchbacks, but that the segment became “more functional and less aspirational” over time. He argued that the new Tiago and Tiago EV are meant to bring back excitement, relevance, and pride to hatchbacks.

“Tata Motors has recently infused fresh energy into its hatchback portfolio. The interventions have just begun, so it could take one or two months before we start seeing the results,” Puneet Gupta, Director India & ASEAN, Mobility Global, earlier told ETAuto.

This is also attributed to the company’s decline in fleet market demand.

“One of the biggest challenges for this segment has been the decline in fleet EV demand. Tata had initially pushed a large number of Tiago EVs into fleet operators, and that demand has weakened,” he added.

Strong momentum across other segments

In contrast, the automaker reported continued growth in its utility vehicle portfolio. Production of the Punch and Nexon rose to 117,711 units during the quarter from 80,001 units a year earlier, while domestic sales increased to 115,882 units from 76,230 units. Exports of the models were largely stable at 317 units.

The new Sierra and Curvv reported strong momentum with production nearly tripling to 25,790 units from 9,135 units in the year-ago period. Domestic sales climbed to 25,150 units from 8,272 units, although exports eased to 23 units from 101 units.

Meanwhile, production for its premium SUV range (Safari and Harrier) rose to 11,976 units from 6,488 units, while domestic sales rose to 12,117 units from 6,536 units during the same period. Exports remained modest at 30 units.

“The company’s focus earlier was on moving customers from hatchbacks to SUVs because that was in line with the global trend. Now it has started renewing focus on hatchbacks as well,” Gupta added.
