Nepal Protests: As the neighbouring Himalayan nation of Nepal reels under a serious political crisis after two days of anti-government protests, the border states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and West Bengal have been put on round-the-clock high alert over the law and order situation, officials said.

“To assist Indian citizens stranded in Nepal, a 24×7 special control room has been established at the police headquarters in Lucknow under the law and order branch,” news agency PTI reported, citing Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash.

The ADG added that the control room can be reached through three helpline numbers: 0522-2390257, 0522-2724010, 9454401674; and on WhatsApp: 9454401674.

He further said that the social media cell of the police headquarters has also been tasked with monitoring all sensitive information and posts related to Nepal. Immediate action will be taken wherever required, he added.

Additionally, Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna has instructed that enhanced patrolling, strengthened surveillance and deployment of additional police force be ensured along the Indo-Nepalese border to deal with any contingency.

Further, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a review meeting on Tuesday regarding the security of the state’s border districts adjoining Nepal.

The meeting was being attended by senior officers of the Border Security Force, the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, the Principal Secretary, the ADG (Law & Order), the ADG (Intelligence), the Commissioner of Kumaon, the Inspector General of Police (Kumaon), as well as the District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Udham Singh Nagar districts.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, meanwhile, urged people to maintain peace in the northern districts bordering Nepal.

“We love Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. We love all the bordering countries. I also urge residents of Siliguri, Kalimpong, and other areas near the Nepal border to maintain peace and avoid activities that could create any trouble because it is not our problem. Let them bring back normalcy. We cannot interfere; this is not our matter,” Banerjee said.

According to officials, the SSB, which guards the 1751-km unfenced international front with Nepal, has stepped up security across all its border posts and vulnerable points in the wake of the unrest. All the field commanders of the SSB have been asked to be on the ground and maintain an enhanced vigil, they said.

“Additional forces have been deployed at 22 outposts of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) along the border, while police stations in five border areas are keeping surveillance through drone cameras,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Kumar said in Balrampur.

Nepal Unrest

Nepal is reeling under a serious political crisis after two days of anti-government protests saw attacks on private residences of several high-profile leaders, the headquarters of political parties and even the Parliament.

On Monday, at least 19 people died in police action against the agitators and many others were injured.

The protests led by students appeared to reflect the growing public anger with the Oli dispensation over a range of issues, including a ban on social media and alleged inaction against corruption.

Though the Nepal government on Monday night revoked its ban on social media, following what has been dubbed as ‘Gen Z’ protests in the neighbouring country, yet the anti-government demonstrations intensified on Tuesday, leading to arson and violence in many cases.
