Two terrorists and two soldiers were killed after an encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces during an anti-terror operation in the forest area of Gudar in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam, officials said on Monday.

Security forces, including, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and CRPF, launched a search operation in the Gudar forest area following information about the presence of terrorists there.

They said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists opened fire at the positions of the security forces.

“Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of the Bravehearts, Sub Perbhat Gaur and L/Nk Narender Sindhu, in line of duty for the Nation. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us. #IndianArmy expresses deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families,” Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army said in a post on X.

It said vigilant troops observed suspicious activity and, upon being challenged, the terrorists opened fire, “prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire during which one terrorist has been eliminated and a junior commissioned officer suffered injuries.”

The two slain terrorists have been identified as Amir Bashir Dar, a local militant affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Rehman Bahi, a Pakistani national. Both were active in the Pir Panjal area, officials said. The operation is still underway, they added.

The area saw a similar encounter last month, where two terrorists were killed and two security personnel made the supreme sacrifice.

The security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in a forest area at Akhal in the south Kashmir district on August 1, following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists there. The gun battle in the Akhal forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgama was one of the longest anti-terror operations in the valley.
