India climbs 4 paces in Henley passport index, US slips 3 ranks; Singapore tops the list

India’s passport has climbed to 76th place in the Henley Passport Index 2025 granting Indian citizens visa-free access to 58 countries

India has recorded a significant jump in the Henley Passport Index 2025, climbing to the 76th spot worldwide with visa-free access to 58 destinations. This marks one of the biggest year-on-year improvements among major economies reflecting India’s growing global influence, economic clout and diplomatic reach. The rise also signals the country’s enhanced international profile, as more nations recognise India as a reliable partner in trade, security and multilateral forums.

The improvement comes amid a historic low for the United States, which dropped to 10th place, tied with Iceland and Lithuania—the lowest ranking for the US in two decades. While US citizens have seen slightly reduced visa-free mobility, Indians are gaining greater global access, signaling India’s rise as a trusted global partner.

Globally, Singapore tops the rankings, offering visa-free access to 193 destinations, followed by Japan and South Korea at 190 destinations. Countries like Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain are ranked third with 189 destinations, while Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Portugal occupy fourth place with 188. Switzerland, New Zealand and Greece are fifth with 187 destinations. Compared to these nations, India still has room to grow, but its steady ascent highlights increasing travel freedom for Indian citizens.

Experts attribute India’s passport growth to expanding international partnerships, reciprocal visa agreements and active engagement in forums like the G20, Brics and Asean. India’s rising global mobility also reflects strengthened bilateral relations, a growing economy and the country’s strategic importance on issues such as climate, technology and defence cooperation. For Indians, this translates into easier travel for work, study, tourism and business and more opportunities to engage globally.

India’s upward trajectory, even as some traditional powers like the US experience setbacks showcases the country’s emerging leadership and growing relevance on the world stage. As global mobility continues to reflect diplomatic influence, India’s improved passport strength signals that the country is increasingly being seen as a responsible and influential player in international affairs, benefiting both its citizens and its standing in the world.
