Singer and music composer Amaal Mallik, currently seen inside the Bigg Boss 19 house, has revealed that he lives with sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during the night, depriving the body of sufficient oxygen.

The 35-year-old shared that he relies on a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine every night, which allows him to sleep safely and without disruption.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes interruptions in breathing during sleep. Doctors explain that it usually occurs due to a blocked airway (obstructive sleep apnea) or because the brain fails to regulate breathing properly (central sleep apnea).

Each pause in breathing lowers oxygen levels, triggering a survival reflex that briefly wakes you up to restart breathing. While this reflex keeps you alive, it fragments sleep — often leading to insomnia, fatigue, and other health concerns.

If left untreated, sleep apnea can also place stress on the heart, increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications. Studies suggest that nearly 1 billion people worldwide, aged 30–69 years, live with obstructive sleep apnea.

Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Loud snoring

Pauses in breathing while asleep

Waking up gasping or breathless

Disturbed sleep or frequent waking

Daytime sleepiness and fatigue

Morning headaches

Night sweats

Mood changes or irritability

What is a CPAP Machine?

A CPAP machine is one of the most effective treatments for sleep apnea. It delivers a steady flow of pressurised air through a mask worn over the nose or mouth, ensuring the airway remains open throughout the night.

Most CPAP devices include:

A mask (covering nose or nose and mouth)

Straps to secure the mask

A tube connecting the mask to the motor

A motor that blows filtered, pressurised air

There are different types of PAP devices:

Auto CPAP: Automatically adjusts pressure as needed.

Bi-level PAP: Uses higher pressure when inhaling and lower pressure while exhaling.

Auto-bilevel PAP: Self-adjusts both inhalation and exhalation pressures.

How Does CPAP Help?

By keeping the airway open, the CPAP prevents the tongue and soft tissues of the throat from collapsing and blocking airflow. This leads to better oxygen supply, uninterrupted sleep cycles, and improved overall health.

Doctors emphasise that the device must be used every time you sleep, including naps, to be effective. Regular cleaning of the mask and tubing, along with timely replacements, is also essential for hygiene and efficiency.
