Ganesh Visarjan At Home: With the festive season of Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, families and housing societies are gearing up to greet Lord Ganesha with enthusiasm. The festival, marked by music, prayers, and cultural performances, ends with the visarjan, or immersion of idols.

Idols are traditionally immersed in rivers, lakes, or the sea. Environmentalists and civic bodies are now encouraging devotees to choose eco-friendly visarjan methods.

The focus is on performing immersion at home or in specially built society tanks to ensure celebrations do not damage the environment.

Step-by-Step: How to Do Eco-Friendly Visarjan at Home

Eco-friendly visarjan at home is simple, safe, and requires minimal arrangements. Here are a few of the suggested steps:

  1. Select a Clay Idol: Natural clay idols melt easily and do not emit dangerous chemicals.
  2. Choose a Big Container: Take a bucket, tub, or an earthen pot and fill it with clean water. Put the idol in it carefully.
  3. Do Rituals Properly: Perform the visarjan rituals using prayers, flowers, and diyas as you would near a water body.
  4. Let the Idol Dissolve: Allow the clay idol to be immersed in the water and let it disintegrate on its own. It may take a few hours.
  5. Reuse the Water: After the idol dissolves, the water can be drained into plants, gardens, or society lawns and converted the ritual into a green practice.

Community Efforts: Visarjan in Society Tanks

Numerous residential societies are arranging community visarjan tanks for mass immersion. This way, not only is water pollution minimised, but shared responsibility is also promoted.

These society tanks are made with filtered outlets so that the dissolved content can be separately extracted. The water can then be utilised for irrigation or other cleaning purposes.

Families of members attending these visarjans in their societies still do their aarti and rituals prior to putting the idol into the tank.

Towards a Greener Celebration

Authorities in many cities have also constructed man-made ponds to promote safe immersions. These options are showing the way to minimise the stress on natural water bodies.

Environment-friendly visarjan methods not only protect the planet but also teach devotees a sense of responsibility. With these techniques, communities and families can ensure that Lord Ganesha’s devotion is celebrated in conjunction with nature.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival of happiness and unity. This year, eco-friendly visarjan offers a way to honour tradition while ensuring the planet remains safe for the next generation.
