Hardy, a Bafta and Emmy-nominated writer and director, had recently completed production on ‘Wrath of the Gods’, the concluding chapter to the Wicker Man trilogy, which was scheduled to premiere in London later this month. In a statement to the Press Association, Hardy’s family said: “Our family is devastated to share that Justin passed away last night. He was so full of life right to the end, and incredibly energised to be working towards premiering his latest film this month. We are all so proud of him and heartbroken he won’t be with us at his premiere. He was a man of family, of boundless creativity, and of devotion for everyone he held dear.”

Hardy had just finished production on ‘Wrath of the Gods’, which represents the conclusion to the trilogy that began with his father’s 1973 cult horror classic ‘The Wicker Man’ and continued with the 2011 follow-up ‘The Wicker Tree’. The film was inspired by recently discovered scripts and storyboards created by Robin Hardy, allowing Hardy to realise his father’s final creative vision.

In 2024, Hardy worked with his brother Dominic on a documentary titled ‘Children of the Wicker Man’ that delved into the long shadow of their father’s groundbreaking 1973 film. The documentary offered insights into how the horror classic had influenced cinema and culture over five decades. The original ‘Wicker Man’ was a Christopher Lee-starring film about a policeman who was sent to a remote Scottish island community to investigate the disappearance of a local girl. It became a cultural landmark and inspired many years of critical discussions and academic studies.

Justin Hardy built an acclaimed career beyond the ‘Wicker Man’ films

He has made historical films and documentaries such as ‘Princes In The Tower’, ‘Trafalgar Battle Surgeon’, ‘The Relief Of Belsen’ and ‘Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen’. These productions proved him to be an artist who could handle important historical tales in film.In addition, Hardy taught screenwriting at University College London, sharing his expertise and experience with the next generation of filmmakers.
