Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most auspicious and widely celebrated festivals in India. The festival, also known as Ganeshotsav, begins on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha and continues until Anant Chaturdashi, the day dedicated to Ganesh Visarjan. This year, the Chaturthi Tithi will begin at 1:54 PM on August 26, and conclude at 3:44 PM on August 27, 2025.

As the festival approaches, it is the perfect time to bring home Lord Ganesha in a way that is both devotional and sustainable. Traditionally, Ganesha idols are crafted with materials that can harm rivers and lakes when immersed during visarjan.

Rice and Flour Ganesha

Beyond making modaks, Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet, rice flour can also be used to create the idol. Simply prepare a dough by mixing rice flour, a little water and a pinch of salt until smooth and pliable. Shape the dough into an idol and once the puja rituals are complete, the idol can be dissolved in water without causing any harm to the environment.

Fruits and Vegetables Ganesha

Bring colour and freshness into your celebration with an idol made of fruits and vegetables. Use cabbage, cucumber, chillies, apples and bananas to design a unique Ganapati idol. Apart from being visually striking, it also encourages eco-friendly practices by avoiding harmful substances.

Sugar Paste Ganesha

For those with a flair for baking, try crafting an idol out of sugar paste or fondant. These bakery essentials allow for intricate designs and fine detailing, and since they come in multiple colours and flavours, your idol can be both beautiful and edible.

Mawa Ganesha

Mawa or khoya, a milk-based product, can be moulded into an idol that is equally divine and delicious. The soft texture makes it easy to sculpt, and you can further decorate the idol with traditional sweets like laddoos and modaks to complete the festive look.

Chocolate Ganesha

Perhaps the sweetest version of them all, a chocolate Ganapati idol is perfect for families with children. Use chocolate ganache or mouldable chocolate dough to craft the idol, and finish by decorating with dry fruits and nuts. After the celebration, this idol can be shared as prasad, making it both eco-conscious and delightful.

By making these simple yet thoughtful choices, you can add a personal touch to your Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations while keeping the environment safe.
