China: 12 dead, 4 missing after under-construction bridge collapses into Yellow River

The collapse of an under construction railway bridge over a major river in China has killed at least 12 workers and left four others missing.

At least 12 workers were killed and four remain missing after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed over the Yellow River in northwest China’s Qinghai province, according to state media reports.

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. Friday during a tensioning operation, when a steel cable suddenly snapped, bringing down a large portion of the bridge’s distinctive aquamarine arch. A section of the deck now hangs twisted above the river, images released by the official Xinhua News Agency show.

Sixteen workers were on the site at the time. While rescuers managed to recover several bodies, efforts are ongoing to locate the missing, with boats, a helicopter and underwater robots deployed in the search.

The structure, still under construction, stretches 1.6 kilometres in length, with its deck rising 55 metres above the river surface, the China Daily reported.
