In a shocking incident, a man was attacked by nearly half a dozen stray dogs in Maharashtra’s Pimpri-Chinchwad area late at night. The man narrowly managed to escape injuries as the dogs cornered him.

A CCTV footage of the incident showed the man walking through a street at night when a pack of stray dogs attacked him. In a state of panic, the man rushed to a nearby motorcycle and dropped it on the road in an attempt to dissuade the dogs.

When this failed, he was seen using a Kwality Walls advertisement banner as a shield against the dogs and apparently shouted at them. After a while, the dogs fled the area. The shouting also alerted residents in the area, who came out to see the source of the conundrum.

Later, two dogs ran past the spot as the man’s companion attempted to scare them away. After some time, the man left the area, with 2-3 dogs following him later on.

Incidents of stray dog attacks have increasingly gained prominence after a Supreme Court order on August 11 that asked the authorities in Delhi-NCR to round up stray dogs within two months, keep them in the shelter, and not allow them to escape to the outside world, sparking public outcry from animal activists.

On Friday, the Supreme Court on stayed its August 11 order that said stray dogs who are picked up in Delhi-NCR must not be released. In a modified order, the top court said that they must be released back to their original places after sterilisation and immunisation.

The court said the dogs that are picked up must be released after sterilisation and immunisation, except those infected with rabies or exhibiting aggressive behaviour. It also banned public feeding of stray dogs on the streets and in public places.

The court’s revised order came as a relief to animal welfare groups and caregivers, who had raised concerns about the practicality of relocating large numbers of dogs amid limited shelter infrastructure. Celebrations broke out at Jantar Mantar, where many had gathered in anticipation of the verdict, hailing it as a “victory of compassion”.
